Bhubaneswar: Orissa athletes Purnima Hembram and Jauna Murmu secured gold and silver medals respectively in their respective events on the final day of the 57th National Senior Inter-State Athletic Championships in Guntur, Tuesday.
Purnima secured the gold in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.72 seconds. Jharkhand girl Anurupa Kumari bagged silver in 13.88 seconds while Asian Athletics Championships heptathlon gold medallist Swapna Barman of West Bengal, won the bronze medal with a timing of 14.06 seconds. Barman incidentally had said earlier, that she would not be taking part in the heptathlon. It was sweet revenge for Purnima as she had been beaten by Barman in Bhubaneswar.
Jauna on the other hand, secured her second individual medal when she bagged a silver medal in the 400 metres clocking a time of 53.52 seconds. Her first medal had come in the 400m hurdles a couple of days back. Kerala girl Anilda Thomas clinched the gold with 53.20 seconds and her statemate Anu Raghavan ended up with a bronze with a timing of 53.68 seconds.
Orissa bagged five medals in the meet, comprising three golds and two silvers. Beside Purnima, Amiya Kumar Mallick and Srabani Nanda were the gold medallists for Orissa. Amiya bagged the gold in the men’s 200m with a timing of 21.65 seconds while Srabani clinched the gold in the women’s 200m, clocking 24.18 seconds.
