1.5 years after love marriage, wife hacked to death for dowry

Sundargarh: A youth allegedly hacked his wife to death over dowry at Chikatnali village near Tikayatpali in Sundargarh district late Sunday night.

The incident comes in the wake of just 1.5 years after the couple’s love marriage, villagers said. The deceased was identified as Binita Oram (20), wife of the accused, Gandua Oram (22).

According to reports, Gandua had a relationship with Binita of Kendudihi village under Lahunipara police limits. However, the couple’s family members did not approve the relationship.

With no support from the family, the two lovebirds had eloped and resided in a neighbouring state for 1.5 years. It was three months back they returned with their three-month old baby.

Sources said, an exchange of words erupted between the two after Gandua allegedly asked Binita to bring money from her father as dowry.

The argument turned fatal as Gandua lost cool and attacked Binita with an axe kept in the house. In a fit of rage, he hacked her, leading to her death on the spot. On being informed, police reached the village and detained the accused for interrogation. The body was seized and sent for autopsy.

Police registered a case based on a complaint by the girl’s father and launched a probe.
