11,000 schools have no kitchens to cook MDM

Bhubaneswar, March 19: About 11,000 of 62,640 schools in the state, where mid-day meal (MDM) programme runs, have no kitchens, school and mass education minister Debi Prasad Mishra said in the assembly Thursday.
Replying to a written question of legislator Chandra Sekhar Majhi, the minister pointed out, “Of the total 62,640 MDM- implemented schools, 10,930 schools do not have kitchens.” Mishra said, “The state government has made a budgetary provision for all these schools.”
Rs 17,410.8 lakh was sanctioned to all the districts for construction of MDM kitchen sheds in these schools and officials have been asked to expedite the process,” the minister said.
To another query, the minister said as many as 59 gram panchayats in 21 districts do not have high schools.
While nine gram panchayats (GPs) in Malkangiri, eight GPs in Mayurbhanj, seven GPs in Nayagarh, four GPs each in Nuapada, Kandhamal, three GPs each in Jharsugurda, Ganjam, Sambalpur and Sundargarh, two GPs each in Bolangir, Bargarh, Koraput, and one GP each in Balasore, Khurda, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Subarnapur do not have high schools, Mishra said.
