1,300 afflicted with jaundice in Sambalpur, disease spreading

Bhubaneswar, Dec 16: Jaundice, which has taken an epidemic shape in the western district of Sambalpur is now spreading its wings to the neighbouring Bargarh district. Jaundice has already claimed 15 lives in Sambalpur while more than 1,300 remain affected by the disease. The new track of the disease revealed that traces of jaundice have also been found in Attabira block of Bargarh district, about 25 km away from the Sambalpur. According to official reports, about nine people in Attabira block have been detected with jaundice and are being treated in the district headquarters hospital. The health department officials are in the process of spreading awareness along with providing free treatment to the affected people. However, the outbreak of the ailment has not shown symptoms of any control due to the heavy sewerage contamination. “The symptoms showed its prominence only after 21 days of the infection in a person while early detection is essential for good treatment,” said Kailash Dash, director public health. The director further informed Orissa POST the epidemic will soon come under control as the department has deployed 150 health workers in the district.
