Stamps on Hockey WC, Paika rebellion soon

Bhubaneswar: Postal services were an essential part of daily life earlier. Sending and receiving letters used to be a common activity. Postal stamps are rarely in use today due to technological innovations. However, the government still releases stamps to celebrate an event, create awareness, honour an achiever etc.

The postal department is going to release two new stamps November 27, 2018. One of these stamps is an attempt to commemorate the 14th edition of Men’s Hockey World Cup, which scheduled to be held from 28th November to 16th December in Bhubaneswar. Another stamp would honour the Paika Rebellion, an armed resistance against the British rule in Odisha in 1817.

Orissa POST interacted with a staffer of Philatelic Bureau Nalini Natua in this regard who said that 35 stamps were released this year. These stamps were based on Central Plantation Crop research Institute (ICAR), India-Vietnam Joint Issue, India-ASEAN commemorative summit, Potters Wheel, World Environment Day and different holiday destinations in India among several others.

Moreover, the Indian Post released a special postage stamp on former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik commemorating his 102nd birth anniversary. The stamp was released by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik May 5 this year.
