2 killed in separate incidents as walls cave in following heavy rain in Kendrapara

Kendrapara: With ‘Depression’-induced rain that battered many parts of Kendrapara for the last 24 hours, at least two elderly persons were killed in separate incidents of wall collapse in the district Monday.

In the first incident, a deceased elderly woman identified as 60-year-old Nalini Prusty, the wife of Anama from Dihasahi village of Benipur panchayat under Derabisi block, was sleeping in her kutcha house.

A wall of Nalini’s house caved in on her due to incessant rain and later she succumbed to grievous injuries in the wee hours of Monday.

In the second incident, the deceased, an elderly man was identified as Abhaya Mohapatra (68) of Badabetara village under Garadapur block. He was the son of Sudarshan Mohapatra of the same village.

Abhaya was sleeping in his kutcha house along with other family members when a wall collapsed on him leading to an untimely death. However, his grand-daughter-in-law Kalpana had a close shave.

Kalpana, who had sustained a fracture on her leg, was later rescued and sent to Kendrapara district headquarters hospital for treatment.

It is pertinent to mention, Kendrapara district received approximately 141mm rainfall in the last 24 hours while Garadapur block has recorded the maximum of 169mm rainfall.
