2 killed, over 35 injured in separate road mishaps

Sambalpur/Keonjhar: Two people were killed while at least 35 persons sustained injuries in separate road mishaps in the state, Wednesday.

In Sambalpur district, at least 10 persons were injured after the bus in which they were travelling overturned near Beheranbasa area in Jujumura of Sambalpur district. The mishap occurred when the private bus was en route to Kesapali from Sambalpur.

All the injured were admitted to District headquarters hospital and Sadar hospital while four who sustained critical injuries were rushed to Burla-based VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) hospital.

On being informed police reached the spot and started an investigation into the incident, though the exact reason behind the mishap is not yet established.

In another incident, a bus carrying employees of Tata Project Limited met with an accident in Joda area of Keonjhar district. Reportedly, the bus was returning to Joda after completion of work at the Khondbond mines.

Twenty five persons sustained injuries while five of them were rushed to Tata Steel hospital in Joda in critical condition, informed sources.

Similarly, in Jharsuguda district, a 25-year-old died in a road mishap that took place on National Highway 49 at Kolabira under Sinapali police limits in this district, Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Santosh Keuta, a resident of Brajarajnagar.

According to sources, Santosh was heading towards Brajarajnagar on his motorcycle when a speeding truck hit him, in a bid to overtake an oil tanker. Some passersby rushed Santosh to a local hospital but doctors declared him ‘brought dead’.

In another incident, tension erupted in Lamtaput of Koraput district over the death of a local man in a road accident, Monday night. The villagers staged a road blockade and forcibly entered the Lamtaput police outpost demanding compensation for the victim’s family.

According to sources, Gauranga Khil of Male village died after being run over by a car near Badpada village around 7-km from Lamtaput. The car also hit another car and one bullock was killed in the accident. After getting information, Police had reached the spot and seized both the cars and shifted the dead to the hospital, sources added.

When the locals came to know about the incident, they staged a road blockade Tuesday morning demanding compensation for the bereaved family. The agitated locals also entered the police outpost while protesting the incident.

The cops pacified the mob and sent the body for autopsy. A case was registered and a probe launched.
