Khurda: Two poachers were arrested Monday on charges of hunting migratory birds in Chilika Lake. The carcasses of 13 of birds were also seized from their possession.
Tangi wildlife division officials were on a regular patrolling in Bhusandapur area close to the lake Monday. During the patrolling, they came across two persons who evoked suspicion. The officials grilled them and the beans spilled out. Thirteen carcasses were found in their possession and they could not produce any valid reason as to how they got those. They were then arrested.
The identities of the poachers have not been shared by the department for investigative reasons.
Large numbers of different species of migratory birds from places like Caspian region, Siberia, Kazakh, Lake Baikal and Russia have started flocking to the Chilika. Hence the number of bird hunters has also increased around the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia.
In order to ensure a safe stay for these avian guests every year, the forest department takes a number of steps. However, even then some poachers manage to give the law a slip.
