2 Romanians held for installing skimming device at ATM

Panaji: Two Romanian nationals were arrested by the Goa Police Wednesday for allegedly trying to steal money from a bank ATM by installing a skimming device in it, an official said.

The two men were trying to install the device in the automated teller machine (ATM) of a nationalised bank in Margao town, about 35 km from here, when some policemen spotted them in the wee hours, he said.

On seeing the policemen, the two accused, identified as Paul Daniel Vasil (35) and Costansio Caboo (40), tried to run away but the police nabbed them, an official at Fatorda police station said.

The two men were arrested and booked under relevant sections, he added.

A skimming device is a card reader which can be disguised to look like a part of the ATM machine. It saves the user’s card number and pin code, which is then replicated into a counterfeit copy for theft.
