Mahanga, Dec 10: Two school kids died and seven other kids of Orissa Brigade Sainik School of Nischintakoili sustained injuries Wednesday after its transport vehicle met with an accident due to heavy fog on Nischintakoili-Lalitagiri RD Road near Pump House Chhak under the local police limits in Cuttack district.
The deceased were identified as Rajesh (5), son of Pramod Behera of Purunamath village and Krushnachandra (6), son of Sanjay Sahoo of Talanahanga.
The driver of the vehicle managed to flee while the officials of Bhadreswar police out-post seized the vehicle.
Following the incident, irate mobs blocked Jagatpur-Chandbali road near Nischintakoili CHC. Alerted, Nischintakoili IIC Pradyumna Behera, Salipur IIC Ramesh Majhi and Mahanga IIC Soumendu Shekhar Tripathy reached the spot and tried to pacify the crowd.
On being directed by the collector, additional tehsildar of Mahanga Tapandev Chakraborty went to the spot and provided `10,000 to each to the bereaved families on behalf of Red Cross Society. Chakraborty also said the families would be adequately compensated following which the blockade was withdrawn.
According to reports, a Tata Magic van, carrying 19 students, was on its way to the school from Mahanga area when the vehicle hit a roadside tree near Pump House Chhak. Locals rescued the victims and rushed them to Nischintakoili CHC. However, Rajesh was declared dead on arrival. Krushnachandra, in a critical condition, was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital but he succumbed to the injuries.
