Puri: Two students of Nimapara Autonomous College have entered into the Limca Book of Records by travelling around 800 km on bicycles to create awareness on conservation of Olive Ridley turtles.
Soumyaranjan Biswal and Dilip Biswal of Nimapara College have received a confirmation in this regard from the record book’s editorial staffer Arya Priyadarshini recently.
Soumyaranjan and Dilip have secured places in the 2019 edition of the record book. The duo would receive certificates and trophies from the Limca Book of Records February 19, 2019, sources said.
Thousands of Olive Ridley turtles gather at Gahiramatha in Kendrapara, Rishikulya mouth area in Ganjam and Puri coast every year for laying eggs. However, many turtles die on the Odisha coast due to illegal fishing through trawlers and mechanised boats.
“We had decided to create awareness on the conservation of Olive Ridleys by travelling on cycles. We had started our journey from Konark March 7 and travelled to places like Berhampur and Kendrapara,” said the duo.
They had visited several educational institutions and offices of social organisations to create awareness on the Olive Ridley turtles.
