Mayurbhanj: Jharpokharia police arrested three people, including a middleman and a couple in connection with the alleged selling of a one-month-old infant in Mayurbhanj district.
The police acted on the complaint filed by the infant’s mother Malati Diga, a resident of Sankhabhanga village under Jharpokharia police limits. She had filed an FIR with the Jharpokharia police Sunday in this regard.
Sources said that Malati had given birth to the baby boy last month. As the baby was not keeping well, she decided to take him for treatment at Sirsa Community Health Centre (CHC).
However, when she was on her way to the medical facility August 22, she was accosted by the ‘middleman’. Initially, the middleman tried to allure her with money and other gifts so that she would give the infant to him. When Malati refused to do so, he snatched the baby and fled.
“He (middleman) handed me Rs 1,100 and forcibly took the infant from my arms. I tried to chase him down, but he got away in a car. I have no idea who the person is,” Malati said in her complaint.
Personnel from Jharpokharia police conducted an investigation and they rescued Sunday the baby from Rairangpur.
According to Baripada Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) KK Hariprasad, police have detained three people: the intermediary who sold the baby and the couple who bought the infant.
Meanwhile, the infant has been admitted to PRM Medical College & Hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for treatment. An investigation into the matter is currently underway.
