3 killed, over 24 hurt in separate road mishaps

Nuapada/Keonjhar: Three people were killed while over 24 others were injured in separate road mishaps in Nuapada and Keonjhar districts, on the wee hours of Wednesday.

In the first instance from Nuapada district, a labourer was killed and 24 others injured after a mini-truck, they were travelling in, overturned near Junani village under Khariar police limits.

The deceased person has been identified as Abhikant Nayak. Among the injured labourers, five are stated to be critical and are undergoing treatment at Nuapada district headquarters hospital.

According to reports, 30 labourers of Uparapita village were travelling to Kantabanji railway station in the mini-truck, to catch a train for Andhra Pradesh. The accident happened around 4am when the driver lost control and the vehicle turned turtle on National Highway 353 near Junani village.

On intimation, the police reached the spot and rushed the victims to the Nuapada DHH. Later, police seized the ill-fated truck and launched a probe into the incident.

Similarly, two persons were killed in a road mishap that took place at Hanuman Chhak near Khuntapada under Durumunga police limits in Keonjhar district, Tuesday evening.

The identities of the deceased persons are yet to be ascertained.

According to sources, the duo was heading to a local market this evening when the driver lost control over the motorcycle and crashed into the railings of a culvert. The collision was so severe that the duo was flung into the air and while landing suffered multiple injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, but were declared ‘dead upon arrival’, sources further informed.

Reportedly, the police have seized the mangled vehicle and a probe into the accident is underway.
