4 dead, several injured in road mishaps  

Paradip/Nayagarh: At least three persons were killed in separate road accidents in Paradip and Nayagarh Tuesday.

In the first incident, two persons were killed when the two-wheeler they were riding dashed against a culvert after the rider lost control near Balitutha-Nuagaon road in Paradip. The deceased have been identified as Subash Rout of Marshaghai area of Kendrapara and Rabindra Lenka of Ersama area in Jagatsinghpur.

In another incident, a person, riding pillion, was critically injured in an accident and has been admitted to Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital.

Similarly, an elderly man was run over by a vehicle at Samantarapur under Itamati police limits in Nayagarh. The deceased has been identified as Jogi Palei of Kestapada village under Netar panchayat who worked as a painter.

Palei’s body was recovered from a drain. Following the incident, tension erupted in the area as locals staged a blockade on Nayagarh-Ranpur road by burning tyres demanding compensation for the kin of the deceased.

In another road mishap, two trucks collided near Dasapalla, killing the helper in one. The identity of the helper is yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, one of the drivers who sustained serious injuries was rushed to the district headquarters hospital for treatment. The cops reached the spot and seized the two trucks.

Similarly, at least seven persons were critically injured after a truck carrying Jatra artistes turned turtle near a Shiva temple at Kalimati under Bamebari police limits in Keonjhar district.

All the critically-injured persons were later admitted to Jhumpura community health centre (CHC) for treatment.

The incident occurred after the truck driver lost control over the vehicle, following which it overturned. The artistes are members of Baneswari Gananatya.

In another incident, as many as 12 persons were injured when a bus in which they were travelling hit a road-side tree near a village in Nayagarh district.

The incident took place at Ratakhandi village under Khandapada block in the district in the afternoon. As per information, the bus carrying around 25 passengers hit a tree while going towards Dholmara from Nayagarh town.

Out of 12 injured, seven were shifted to the district headquarters hospital when their condition turned critical, reports added.

Nayagarh district Collector N Thirumala Naik and Superintendent of Police Sashi Bhusan Satpathy visited the hospital and enquired about the condition of the injured passengers.

On being informed, police rushed to the spot and started investigation. The driver of the bus fled the spot soon after the incident. The exact reason behind the accident is yet to be ascertained.
