New Delhi: Four newly-elected Rajya Sabha MPs from Odisha took the oath of office at Rajya Sabha chamber in Parliament House here, Wednesday, while adhering to physical distancing norms.

Four Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MPs – Subhash Singh, Muzibulla Khan, Sujeet Kumar and Mamata Mahanta – are among 45 parliamentarians, who were administered oath by Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu in the House chamber. The leaders from Odisha took oath in Odia language.

The Rajya Sabha elections were held for 61 seats between March and June, of which 42 members were elected unopposed, including 28 first-timers, and elections were held for 19 vacancies and 15 other first-timers won a berth in the Rajya Sabha.

As many as 49 MPs were elected to the upper house for the first time while 12 were re-elected. The BJD MPs had been elected to the Upper House unopposed March 18, 2020. Significantly, due to Covid-19 pandemic, the oath taking ceremony was held inside Rajya Sabha chambers during inter-session for the first time. Other MPs who were not present at the ceremony will be administered oath later.

Addressing the new members, the RS Chairman said that they should reflect on their roles and responsibilities and not fall for the temptation of disrupting the House for short-term gains.
