Boipariguda (Koraput): Acting on a tip-off, police Monday arrested five members of a gang in connection with cashew theft in the district in December last year.
According to sources, the gang had stolen three tonne of cashew worth lakhs of rupees from a cashew processing unit at Ghasarada under Boipariguda police limits here December 16, 2018. After stealing the nuts, the gang sold the raw cashews to several businessmen in Jeypore town.
While sources claimed that the gang was being operated by ten members, only five have been arrested and an investigation is on to nab the other five.
However, no cases were registered against the traders who had bought cashew nuts. Police, however, interrogated them and recorded their statements.
Jeypore Sub-divisional Police Officer T Jagarao Reddy said, on receipt of inputs that dacoits were hiding near Jyoti Mills following which police teams reached the spot and nabbed the five accused. “After verification, we found several cases are pending against the five. We have recovered the stolen cashew and recorded the statements of the witnesses u/s 164 of CrPC,” Reddy added.
