5 cops injured in assault by attempt-to-murder accused

Nilagiri: In a shocking incident, the accused in an attempt-to-murder case allegedly chased and hacked five members of a police team with a sharp-edged weapon in Jamudihi village under Nilagiri police station limits of Balasore, Friday. The injured were identified as sub-inspector Biranchi Sahu, assistant sub-inspectors Prabodh Mallick, Ananta Murmu, constables Arjun Madinga and Deepak Pradhan of Nilagiri police station. The accused attacked a village guard (gramrakhi) as well.

All the injured person was admitted to the Nilagiri hospital for treatment. The accused has been identified as Padmalochan Patra, 53, a native of Jamudihi village under Jadi panchayat of Nilagiri police station limits. The incident occurred when the village guard visited the house of the accused to serve him a summons received from the court in connection with an attempt to murder case of 2021. Patra flew into a rage after seeing the village guard and had a heated brawl with him. The village guard informed Nilagiri police officials who reached the spot with force to assist him. However, the accused lost his cool after watching the police team at his house.

Seething in anger, he picked up a billhook and chased and attacked the police team injuring five of them. Eventually, the police team managed to overpower Patra after a scuffle. He has been detained at Nilagiri police station and is being interrogated in this connection. Further investigations are on.
