Angul/Koraput/Jagatsinghpur: At least five persons sustained grievous injuries in separate fire mishaps in Angul, Koraput and Jagatsinghpur districts, Saturday.
In the first incident, three persons were left with serious burn injuries while two houses were reduced to ashes after a sudden fire broke due to LPG leakage in a house at Laxmidharpur village under Jarpada police limits in Angul district.
Valuables worth lakhs of rupees were gutted before the fire brigade team reached the village and doused the flames.
According to sources, the incident occurred while Minati Naik (23), daughter of Kamini Naik, was cooking in the kitchen in the morning. Due to the gas leakage, the cylinder caught fire and exploded leading to the mishap, reports said.
Along with Minati, her brother-in-law Surendra Naik (32) and brother Sidhant (17), who were also in the house at the time of the mishap, sustained varying degrees of burn injuries. Hearing the explosion, neighbours came to their rescue and rushed them to Jarpada community health centre (CHC).
After preliminary treatment, they were shifted to Angul district headquarters hospital (DHH) and again to a private hospital after the doctor did not show up.
Similarly, a woman sustained critical burn injuries in a fire mishap at Uchabanandapur village under Kujang police limits, Saturday. The woman, with critical burn injuries, is undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
While the exact cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained, family members of the victim informed that the incident occurred when she was busy cooking. She was initially rushed to district headquarters hospital and later shifted to SCBMCH after her health condition deteriorated, the family members added.
In another incident, a five-year-old girl sustained serious burn injuries after she fell in a fire while sitting around a bonfire at Pedisil village under Dasmantpur block in Koraput district, Saturday. The victim has been identified as Sasmita Muduli, daughter of Senapati Muduli.
The incident occurred while the girl, along with her friends, was warming around a bonfire after the chilling cold due to the unseasonal rain. Accidentally, she fell into the bonfire and sustained 30% burn injuries. Hearing her screams, family members rescued her and rushed her to the local community health centre (CHC).
