Gobindpali: A matter has come to fore that beneficiaries have to walk for 10 kilometres to avail five kilograms of rice under the food security scheme. They have to cross hilly terrains, rivers and sometime brave all kinds of wild animals for the rice they ought to be given.
Whenever they go to bring the PDS rice, they return after sunset, but the government is yet to give attention towards this suffering.
The matter is reported from Maoist-infested Badadraral panchayat of Malkangiri district. The beneficiaries of Balikuntha, Kutunipadar and Sanuguda face similar problem and continue the tough task. Why? As otherwise they will have to spend days on empty stomach and PDS rice though far and little is their only resort.
They have been demanding arrangements for better distribute the PDS rice at a nearby village. The villagers have been repeatedly requesting the district administration regarding this. However, their pleas failed to yield desired results.
The issue has been condemned in several quarters. Similarly, people of Gumajharana, Badraguda, Nunjhari and Mahulput villages also have to walk for more than 10 kilometres to bring the PDS rice.
“The PDS rice is being distributed at the panchayat office. We have not taken any decision to distribute the rice somewhere else so far,” said the BDO.
