Sambalpur: At a time when rising cases of Covid-19 and black fungus have been causes of concern, as many as three patients undergoing treatment at VIMSAR, Burla here have been diagnosed with white fungus.
The three patients have been identified as a 55 years old female and a 50 years old male from Bargarh district and a 58 years old male from Samblapur district. That they are infected by white fungus was detected May 21.
According to Dr Shankar Ram Chandani, who is treating the trio, said their health condition is stable.
At the same time, two patients infected with black fungus are undergoing treatment at the premiere health institution. They have been identified as a 45 years old resident from Bargarh and a 40 years old resident from Jharsuguda district.
When contacted, ENT Department head Dr Shobhagini Acharya said that a doctors’ team is trying its best to treat the patients. “We don’t have the required medicines to these patients. We have appraised the government of the situation. At the same time, AIIMS has been contacted for medicines,” Acharya added.
Informing about the health condition of the two black fungus-infected patients, VIMSAR superintendent Lal Mohan Nayak said the patients’ conditions are deteriorating by the day. “Of the two patients infected with black fungus, the Bargarh resident is undergoing treatment at ENT department. He had returned from Surat. Few days later, he had tested positive for Covid-19. Then, he had been admitted at Covid ward of VIMSAR. It was when his reports came out to be negative for the infection, he was discharged. His family members again admitted him Friday. The tests confirmed black fungus infection,” he said.
About the Jharsuguda patient, he said the former was admitted Friday. Even though we advised his family members to take him to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar or IGH, Rourkela, they insisted on treating him at VIMSAR.
“We don’t have required medicines to treat such patients and the situation has already been intimated to the government,” he informed.
