Bhubaneswar, Sept 4: Six people who allegedly robbed a motorcyclist of `20,000 and his bike by pointing a toy gun at him were arrested by Nayapalli police Friday.
The accused were identified as Snehasis Das of Jagatsingpur, Asutosh Biswal alias Shiva of Jagatsingpur, Alok Kumar Biswal of Niali, Deepak Kumar Bhuyan of Chintamaniswar, Biswaranjan Pujari of Niali, and Durgaprasad Sahoo of Jagatsingpur.
Two other members of the gang – Manoj Kumar Samal and Asis Samal of Kandarpur – are on the run, said police.
“The six miscreants looted a man on Jaydev Vihar over-bridge while he was talking on his mobile phone. They took away `20,000 and a motorcycle from him by pointing a toy pistol and a knife-cum-cigarette lighter at him,” twin city Police Commissioner Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma told journalists.
“Snehasis Das is the kingpin of the gang. After completing his +2 course, he did a hotel management course. While Asutosh completed his graduation in physics by obtaining first division. Alok was an LIC agent,” added Sharma.
The CP further said that Nayapalli inspector-in-charge Suryamani Pradhan had led a trap to nab the accused.
“Cops in plain clothes were moving on the Jaydev Vihar over-bridge. A cop was holding his mobile phone when the miscreants tried to loot him, but eventually they were nabbed,” the Police Commissioner said.
Police said that they have recovered six motorcycles, two gold chains, nine mobile phones, `20,000, 40 SIM cards, and one toy pistol from their possession. The police added all the miscreants have criminal antecedents and at least 13 cases have been registered against most of them, barring Alok.
A case was registered against the six miscreants and they were produced in a court Friday.
