There have been countless movies churned out by the Hindi film industry that went on to become blockbuster hits, earning startling amounts of money along the way.
But did you know that there have been some films that broke the cash counter even before its release date?

PK – The Aamir Khan starrer film broke several box office records after release but had started doing wonders much before it actually hit the screens. The satellite rights of the film were sold for a whopping Rs 85 crores and the music rights went out for another Rs 15 crores making the film earn Rs 100 crores before release.
Jai Ho – According to a few trade analysts, Salman Khan’s ‘Jai Ho’ made Rs 100 crores before it reached the audiences. The distribution rights of the film were sold to Eros International for Rs 120 crores and the satellite rights of the film were sold out for another Rs 55 crores and the music rights went out for an additional Rs 13 crores.
Dilwale – The Shah Rukh and Kajol starrer may have failed to impress at the box office but with the anticipation around it, the film made a lot of money prior to its release. The film earned Rs 60 crores in satellite rights and Rs 19 crores in music rights. The film earned a whopping Rs 170 crores in distribution rights.
M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story – The film based on the real life journey of former Indian Cricket Team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was much awaited and it fetched the producers Rs 100 crores much before the film’s release. The satellite rights of the film were sold for Rs 55 crores and the music and overseas distribution rights were a total of Rs 15 crores. The film got Rs 20 crores from its marketing tie ups with popular brands and the remake rights of the film were sold to a Hollywood production house for Rs 10 crores.
Kaabil – The theatrical rights of the film went out for Rs 58 crores both including domestic and overseas. The satellite rights went out for Rs 50 crores and the music rights were sold off for another Rs 8 crores. The film made Rs 116 crores through the sale of these rights and had a production budget of Rs 50 crores.
Jab Harry Met Sejal – The Shah Rukh and Anushka starrer sold its overseas and domestic distribution rights for over Rs 100 crores. This perhaps made up for the otherwise poor business that the film actually did.
