6-month prison term for woman school teacher Urmila Parida

Nayagarh: Nayagarh sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) judge Sadyasnata Pati has sent a woman to prison for six months Friday for duping a person of Rs 22,40,000 on the pretext of NGO work.

The woman identified as Urmila Parida, a Hindi teacher of Nandighore Girls’ HS at Odangaon block in Nayagarh district has also been fined Rs 15 lakh by the judge.

According to sources, Urmila was also the secretary of ‘Bhimabhoi Gramya Unayana’ an NGO. She had borrowed more than Rs 22 lakh from her distant relative Bairagi Pendoi for NGO work August 20, 2016 and had promised to return the money within a month.

When Bairagi asked her to return the loan amount, Urmila skirted the issue on some pretext or the other. Finally she issued a cheque of Rs 22,40,000 in October this year.

However, when Bairagi deposited the cheque in his bank it bounced. He informed Urmila about the bounced cheque but failed to get any response. Bairagi then moved the SDJM court against Urmila after which the verdict was handed Friday.
