6 youths arrested in palm-chopping case

Bolangir: Bolangir town police Tuesday night arrested six persons including a +2 girl student in connection with the chopping of palm of a youth at Rajivnagar here.

The arrested have been identified as Tushar Padhi, 19, Asutosh Padhi, 23, Ghasi Banchhor, 28, Jhasaketan Nanda, 23, Dillu Banchhor, 19, and Trishna Behera,19,.

Sources said Trishna, the only girl among the arrested, is a resident of Sambalpur and stayed at a private girl’s hostel here while the other accused are the residents of Bolangir.

Sources added that the five boys went to Trishna after committing the crime and had been hiding there since then. The police were tipped off about them staying there and Tuesday night they raided the hostel, arrested the six and seized a gun from there. A hatchet and four mobile phones, from the houses of the other accused in Bolangir, were also seized by the cops after interrogating the arrested.

In a press conference, town police station sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Smt Barik and inspector in-charge (IIC) Tofan Bag deliberated about the incident in details.

According to the police, Monday, Ghasi Banchhor, Trishna and Tushar along with the other accused were waiting for Alok Ranjan Das and Amit Pattnaik near the canal at Rajivnagar. After Alok and Amit had reached there, the six attacked them with hatchet. During the incident, Alok lost his left palm while Amit sustained leg injuries.

Police said that previous enmity was the reason behind the incident.

Alok has been undergoing treatment at SCB hospital in Cuttack.

Police also informed that Trishna is involved in several other crimes too and they have started investigating her profile. All the accused will be court forwarded to court Thursday.
