Bhubaneswar: At least 62,62,852 people in Odisha were pulled out of multidimensional poverty in five years, according to NITI Aayog’s ‘National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A Progress Review 2023’.
According to the report released by NITI Aayog vice-chairman Suman Berry Monday, at least 13.5 crore people across the country exited the multidimensional poverty between 2015- 16 and 2019-21. Odisha has registered a significant decline of 13.65 percentage points in number of multidimensionality poor in five years— from 29.43 per cent in 2015-16 to 15.68 per cent in 2019- 21, it said.
While rural Odisha registered the fastest decline in poverty – from 32.64 per cent to 17.72 per cent, urban areas saw marginal decline – from 12.32 per cent to 5.42 per cent. Malkangiri topped the chart in the state with 45.01 per cent multidimensional poor population, while Puri has 3.29 per cent multidimensional poor people.
The National MPI measures simultaneous deprivations across the three equally weighted dimensions of health, education, and standard of living that are represented by 12 SDG-aligned indicators. India saw a significant decline of 9.89 percentage points in number of multidimensionally poor – from 24.85 per cent in 2015- 16 to 14.96 per cent in 2019-2021.
