Nabarangpur/Jharigaon, Dec 3: An administrative probe into the case in which a single doctor conducted sterilisation surgeries on 67 persons within 16 hours was submitted to Nabarangpur district collector.
The district administration had entrusted sub-collector Parikshit Sethy, chief district medical officer Niranjan Nayak and district statistical assistant MD Izar Khan to investigate the matter. Even as a doctor is allowed to conduct sterilisation surgeries on 25-30 people in a day, Chandahandi community health centre officer Dr Harishchandra Singh conducted 62 tubectomies and five vasectomies starting from 10 am Monday to 2.45 am Tuesday at Ichchapur primary health centre. Several norms were violated in the surgery camp. The event invited sharp flak from several quarters.
Replying to questions of the investigating team, Dr Singh said he conducted so many surgeries as he did not want to let down patients who had registered their names. He said a generator was used during surgeries as there was no electricity in the PHC. CDMO Nayak said as Dr Singh was an experienced doctor he was engaged in the sterilisation camp.
