79 new positive coronavirus cases in Odisha, tally goes up to 1,517

Bhubaneswar: Odisha reported 79 new positive coronavirus cases Tuesday taking the state’s tally to 1,517. The total number of active cases in Odisha now stands at 861. So far 649 persons have recovered from the coronavirus infection while seven have fallen prey to the deadly disease.

Cuttack district reported the maximum number of cases with 16 people infected by the virus. Second in the list is Bolangir district with 14 positive COVID-19 cases. Other districts that reported positive cases are Keonjhar (eight), Kandhamal (seven), Kendrapara (six), Ganjam (five), Balasore, Khurda and Puri (four each), Nayagarh and Dhenkanal (three each),  Jajpur (two), Jharsuguda, Sonepur and Angul (one each).

Most of the new cases are migrant workers who have returned from other states, said sources.

Details of new cases

Cuttack district topped the list with 16 people testing positive for the virus. Fifteen of the new patients were returnees from India and abroad. One local person has also been hit by the COVID-19 bug. Among the 15, three had recent travel histories to Dubai while five were returnees from Maharashtra. Three persons had returned to the district from West Bengal while an identical number had come back from Andhra Pradesh. One more person who was migrant worker in Tamil Nadu has also tested positive for coronavirus

Bolangir district also saw a spurt in positive coronavirus cases with 14 persons infected. All of them were in quarantine. Seven had travel history to West Bengal, six had returned from Maharashtra while one is a returnee from Tamil Nadu.

Eight positive cases have been reported from Keonjhar district. Two are local contact cases. Among the remaining six, two each are returnees from Gujarat and Bihar. The two others are migrant workers from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra respectively.

Seven persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Kandhamal district. Out of them six are returnees from Tamil Nadu and had been in quarantine. There is also a local person who has been infected by the virus.

Six positive cases have been reported from Kendrapara. All the six were in quarantine centres. Among them, three are returnees from Surat, two are from West Bengal and one from Tamil Nadu.

Of the four new cases in Puri district, three are migrant workers from Tamil Nadu while one person is a returnee from Telengana.

Among the four new COVID-19 cases in Balasore, three are local people while the other person is migrant worker from Telengana.

The three cases reported from Dhenkanal are all migrant workers. Two had returned to Odisha from Telengana while one is a returnee from Maharashtra.

Jajpur district has reported two new COVID-19 cases. Both had recent travel history to West Bengal and were in quarantine.

The single coronavirus infected patient in Jharsuguda is a returnee from Maharashtra. He also was in quarantine.

In Sonepur district one person has tested positive for COVID-19. He is migrant worker who was in quarantine after returning from Gujarat.

The single case reported in Angul district is a Tamil Nadu returnee and had been in quarantine.

Details of infected persons in Ganjam, Khurda and Nayagarh districts are still not available.

With 358 patients, Ganjam district continues to top the tally of COVID-19 cases in Odisha. It is followed by Jajpur with 242 cases, Balasore (137), Bhadrak (106), Khurda (86), Puri (85), Cuttack (75) and Kendrapara (61)
