8-yr-old battles for life, accused held

Sambalpur, Oct 1: An eight-year-old boy of Saraparabahal village under Shasan police limits in this district sustained critical injuries after a woman of the village hacked him with an axe in a human sacrifice bid.
Abhishek Tripathy, the son of Banamali Tripathy, was rushed to Burla-based VSS Medical College and Hospital with multiple injuries on his head, face and hands. Doctors at the hospital have advised the family to shift him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition was critical, said sources.
Police have arrested the accused Panchali Padhan (40), wife of Dayanadhi Padhan, of the village. A case has been registered and the accused would be produced in court Thursday, OIC Rashmita Behera said.
Abhishek, a Class II student of Aditya Residential School, used to visit the residence of the accused frequently which is just 50 meters from his home.
Tuesday evening, Panchali called Abhis­hek to her house and offered him a banana. She then asked him to bow before the gods in her puja room and hacked his head with the axe. Seeing this, the daughters of the accused raised an alarm.
Banamali rushed to the spot and pushed away the accused as she made another attempt to kill the boy. The boy was then rushed to hospital.
