Baripada: Amid allegations of rampant drug peddling in Baripada and other parts of Mayurbhanj district, excise officials arrested two women and seized brown sugar from them at Sunagadia Tuesday.
A mobile squad of the excise department conducted a raid in the area and seized 13.5 gm of brown sugar and Rs 3,150 in cash from the accused Saraswati Mukhi (40) and Priyanka Mukhi (25) of Sunagadia. A case was registered against the two.
The excise department had information about drug peddling in the area. Sleuths have been tracking the peddlers for a while. The squad raided their houses and seized the contraband worth Rs 1.35 lakh.
It was also learnt that a case had earlier been registered against Saraswati in connection with drug peddling in 2016. Her house was raided then and brown sugar worth Rs 75,000 had been recovered.
