Bhubaneswar: Students are back to college after a long summer vacations. This year summer vacations were declared earlier, which were extended due to severe heat wave conditions across the state. Orissa POST interacted with some of the students to find out as to how they spent their summer vacations:
Maheshwar Murmu, a final year B Com student of BJB College said that he could not stay in the hostel due to the oppressive heat and went to his village. He joined computer classes in his village for a month to properly utilize the vacations. “It is better to be at home during vacation instead of staying in the hostel, doing nothing. I am feeling completely energetic after returning from the village.”
Sunita Oram, an M Phil student of Utkal University, on the other hand preferred staying back at the hostel instead of going home for the vacations. The authorities, however, did not allow students to remain in the hostel during the vacation period. “I wanted to stay in the hostel as I am preparing for the comparative exams but due rules and regulations of the college I had to go home.”
Sumitra Mallick, a +2 second year student of Rama Devi Women’s College, enrolled herself in a vocational art class and spent time at home, preparing for her final exam, in the vacation. Sumitra gets sufficient time for studies and learn something new as well.
“Summer is a great time for study and travel; summer study programs are readily available including some that offer internships, providing a work experience,” she said.
Summer vacations provide an opportunity for the interested ones to learn something new that is usually not taught in the classrooms.
Saiprasad Pallai, a student of BJB College, department of mass communication said that he learnt to cook from his mother during the summer break.
Krishna Satpathy, a +3 second year student of Maharishi College said, she went to her village to spent time with her family.
Kumar Krishna, an M Phil student of Utkal University went on a road trip to Sambalpur with his friends.
Sobit Pradhan, a student of University Law College and a part time dancer, took special dance training during the summer break. “it gave me an opportunity to learn some new dance forms,” he said.
