Balasore: A man hacked his wife to death with an axe over a petty family feud at Odangi village under Sadar police limits in Balasore district Saturday.
The victim, a mother of two children, was identified as Anjali Dash (26), wife of Amulya Dash (30). While the reason of the attack remained unclear, police suspected it was the fallout of an altercation between the couple.
According to sources, Amulya used to work as a daily wager in Surat six years back. He stayed in a rented house there where he came in contact with another Odia family and met Anjali.
The two fell in love and decided to marry. But the girl’s family members weren’t too happy with their relationship and objected as Amulya was a daily wager.
So, the two eloped and came back to Amulya’s village. Later, the couple got married in a temple and was staying in the village with their two children.
A week back, the couple broke out into a verbal duel over some issues following which Anjali went back to her house in Surat. However, Amulya convinced her and brought her home.
Again, the couple broke into a fight over the same issue early Saturday morning. Losing his cool, Amulya took an axe, kept in the house, and hacked the woman.
After getting information, Amulya’s younger brother rescued Anjali and rushed her in critical condition to Balasore district headquarters hospital (DHH). She was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further treatment after her condition worsened.
However, the woman breathed her last on the way to SCB, it was learnt. A police team reached the village and launched a probe. Meanwhile, villagers overpowered Amulya and handed him over to police who are interrogating him.
