New Delhi: The BJD MP from Cuttack, Bhartruhari Mahtab, was awarded ‘Outstanding Parliamentarian for 2017’ by President Ram Nath Kovind at a function in the Central Hall of Parliament here Wednesday.
Mahtab thanked his party and people of his constituency for reposing faith in him. Speaking at the event, Mahtab said, “This award is for the party Biju Janata Dal, for leader Naveen Patnaik and for the people of my constituency, who reposed faith in me that here is the person who can work for the state, party and for the constituency. It is the trust of the people which actually has been awarded today.”
Mahtab added, “Today when I stand here in this august house, many times I ponder whether I have fulfilled their dreams, their desires, whether I have lived up to the expectations of the people who have reposed trust in me. Truthfully, I would say this award has assured me that the trust people have in me is awarded and entrusted greater responsibility on my shoulders to serve the people and be their voice in this temple of democracy.”
Mahtab also thanked Indian Parliamentary Group and Speaker Sumitra Mahajan for selecting him for this award.
Along with Mahtab, Nazma Heptulla, Hukumdev Narayan Yadav, Ghulam Nabi Azaad and Dinesh Trivedi were also awarded for 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively. The President, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all the five Outstanding Parliamentarians.
Notably, the awardees have been selected on the basis of their debating skill, awareness on issues, experience, maintenance of dignity, observance of the rules of procedure and contribution in the parliamentary committees. The selections were made by the Indian Parliamentary Group headed by the Lok Sabha Speaker.
