Chhatrapur: Even as the Centre has set a target to make the country open defecation-free (ODF) by October 2, about 2.54 lakh families in Ganjam district still do not have sanitary toilets in their homes.
It was revealed at a review meet organised by district rural development agency (DRDA) at its conference hall Tuesday.
Presiding over the meeting, Collector Bijay Amruta Kulange laid stress on construction of toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission and speeding up of plantation programme under MGNREGS.
The Collector asked the officials to make Ganjam ODF by August 31 or face stringent action.
However, questions are being raised over the timely completion of the project considering the snail’s pace of progress.
Earlier, Hinjlicut block was declared ODF, but the progress would be reviewed again Sunday.
On the other hand, only 926 toilets are being constructed every day against the target of 6,502 raising doubts about meeting the October 2 deadline.
Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) executive engineer Pratap Mohapatra, project officer Sabyasachi Hota and other block level officials were present in the meeting.
