Nuapada: A Maoist cadre, carrying a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head and working under Mainpur division, Tuesday surrendered before the police here.
Purnachandra Majhi (21) gave in as he failed to bear the torture inflicted on him by the non-Odia Maoists, said SP Smit Parmar at a presser.
Purnachandra alias Rohit alias Azad, a resident of Khadupani village under Bhainsadani panchayat of Boden police limits and son of Chandra Singh Majhi, joined the rebels in 2015 and soon became an active member of Mainpur-Nuapada division of the outlawed CPI (Maoist). He was involved in the gun-battles with police at Kathafer and Badajhola and other violent activities. The state government had announced a bounty of Rs 1 lakh for any information on him.
The surrendered ultra said Maoists had forcibly picked him up from his home and made him join their fold. He was given training at various camps under scorching heat and inclement weather condition. But it was difficult to withstand the torture by the non-Odia cadres and that forced him to lay down arms and lead a normal life, admitted the youth.
Police during last one year arrested Maoist Manoj Madkami (30) while two others Sumitra and Durbadal Behera surrendered before Nuapada police.
A few days back a Maoist cadre of Paikamal had surrendered before the police.
All the surrendered ultras are being rehabilitated under the relevant policy of the government, the SP said, urging the left wing extremists to join the mainstream ahead of the 72nd Independence Day.
