New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been put on life support system after his health deteriorated Wednesday evening, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said in a statement.
The 93-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was admitted to AIIMS June 11 this year with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion.
“Unfortunately, his condition worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on life-support system,” the AIIMS statement read.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited AIIMS in the evening and enquired about his condition. Besides, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi and Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani also paid a visit.
Notably, Vajpayee had suffered a stroke in 2009 that weakened his cognitive abilities. Subsequently, he developed dementia.
