Cuttack: A 49-year-old woman of Bharagola village in 42-mouza police outpost limits here was hammered to death by her husband late Sunday night, a Cuttack Sadar police official said Monday.
According to police, they recovered the body of Gitanjali Behera from her residence Monday morning and sent it to SCB Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. The accused husband Sushant Behera (52) is on the run.
“On the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s daughter, Lipika Behera, a case (320/18) has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder),” said Cuttack Sadar sub-inspector (SI) Nrusingh Charan Swain.
Efforts are on to track down the culprit, Swain said, adding that they have recovered the blood-stained hammer from the spot.
According to the complaint, Sushant was under medication for mental disorder. “As per family sources, Sushant had discontinued the medicines for the past couple of days which could have aggravated his condition prompting the barbarous act,” the SI said.
The incident occurred late Sunday after a “disturbed” Sushant beat up Gitanjali and kicked her out of the house before shutting the door from inside.
“Later, he opened the door after having dinner and allowed Gitanjali in. Then, he raised the TV’s volume in an attempt to ensure the jostle between the couple goes unheard before attacking her with the hammer on the head,” Lipika’s complaint read.
