Jharsuguda: The Teachers Day function at the Talapatia High School in this district ended on a disappointing note Wednesday, with students launching a stir demanding appointment of a Mathematics teacher.
The students locked up the school’s main gate with the teachers inside and staged a demonstration.
They said it has been a while since a lady teaching them Mathematics was transferred to another school. They also shouted slogans demanding the immediate appointment of a Mathematics teacher in their school.
Although the teacher was transferred, the authorities never appointed a substitute in her place. This hit the students as they are struggling to learn the subject without a teacher.
On the other hand, the teachers who were locked inside the school decided to celebrate Teachers’ Day without students. To keep the tradition alive the teachers garlanded a photograph of former President Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and paid tributes to him.
Some teachers said the protest by the students was a sharp departure from the past as students have never boycotted any event at the school.
