Dhenkanal: A woman and her minor daughter were burnt alive while her husband and 10-year-old son sustained serious burn injuries when an LPG gas cylinder exploded at their residence in Godipatana village under Ward-3 of Bhuban NAC in the district Friday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Mamata Pothala (38), wife of the injured Duryodhana Pothala, and her daughter Jyotsna Pothala(13).
According to reports, the cylinder had developed a leak and exploded when Jyotsna tried to light the stove to make tea. Her mother rushed in to save her daughter, but was also engulfed in the fire.
Hearing their screams, Duroydhana and his son, who were in another room, also rushed to their rescue, but only to be singed by the fire. Both of them sustained third degree burn injuries, sources said.
Neighbours rescued the two and took them to Bhuban Community Health Centre (CHC). Duroydhana was later shifted to the Angul district headquarters hospital (DHH) for further treatment after his condition worsened.
The fire brigade rushed to the spot and doused the flames while police have started an investigation.
A woman had died in a similar manner while her husband was rendered critical in a bid to save her at Tileibani block of Deogarh district September 4. Last year, a family, including a couple and their two minor daughters, were charred to death in an LPG cylinder explosion in Rourkela.
