Keonjhar/Angul: A bear mauled an elderly man to death at Kuajharan forest in Keonjhar district Saturday. The incident has triggered panic among the people in the area.
In a preliminary investigation, the forest department has confirmed that the casualty was due to bear attack.
Forest officials recovered the body of Rajan Juanga, a resident of Gayalmunda under Ghatagaon block, and sent it to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
Juanga had come to his relative’s house Wednesday, but later went missing. His kin could not trace him even after an intense search. His son Shyamsundar found the mutilated body and informed the forest officials.
In another incident, a woman was severely injured in a bear attack at Santarabandh village under Chhendipada forest range in Angul district Saturday.
The injured was identified as Sanju Sahu, wife of Bansidhar Sahu. According to reports, the bear attacked Sanju while the latter had gone to a nearby forest to collect firewood early in the morning.
She suffered serious injuries on her right leg. Villagers rescued and rushed her to the Chhendipada community health centre.
