Bhograi: Induced by a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, heavy rains lashed various parts of Bhograi block in Balasore district, throwing life out of gear amid reports that walls of several houses have collapsed Thursday.
By 8 am, the area recorded 125.2 mm rain, Baliapal 114 mm and Basta 51 mm leaving low-lying areas waterlogged.
Walls of shanties belonging to Radheshyam De, Subodh Nayak, Sandyarani Patra, Rabindra Mohanty of Jhadsimulia and Binay Bej and Rabindra Tola of Raipur caved in due to continuous rain.
The families who were rendered homeless were accommodated at Jhadsimulia primary school. They were provided food and polythene sheets.
Locals in coastal pockets were apprehensive of deeper trouble while wind blew at 60 km per hour. The sea has been stormy under the impact of the low pressure with waves hitting the coast. A high alert has been sounded at Dhamra and Huguli ports.
Tourists and fishermen were warned against venturing into the sea and visiting beaches at Digha, Mandaramani, Shankarpur, Udaypur, Talsari and Dagara. Roads in many villages were under water.
