Bantala: A goatherd rescued a newborn girl buried in a pit at Talabani in Nuakheta Saruali village under Bantala police limits in Angul district Sunday.
Mangulu Jani was grazing goats when he heard a faint cry emerging from a pit and rushed to the spot. He rescued the baby girl and brought her back to the village. A woman, Pratima Bhoi, attended to the baby.
Later, Bhoi handed over the baby to the local ASHA Sukanti Nayak for treatment. It is suspected that an unwed mother might have buried the baby.
The ASHA requisitioned an ambulance and rushed the baby to the Bantala community health centre. After primary treatment, doctors shifted her to the district headquarters hospital.
The health condition of the newborn improved after treatment at the district headquarters hospital, said Madhumsita Dwivedi, coordinator of community health programme in Bantala.
The newborn has been admitted to the special newborn care unit (SNCU) of the hospital to check spread of infection under the supervision of Dr Deepak Sahoo, Dwivedi said.
Bantala IIC Sabysachi Rout said action will be taken against the guilty after conducting a probe.
