Buguda: A male blackbuck was killed in a road mishap at Trinathbata on Antarbata road under Buguda police limits in Ganjam district Sunday night.
The animal, believed to be about 10 months old, was crossing the road at Trinathbata at 9 pm when an unknown vehicle hit it and sped away.
Forest ranger Dushasan Nayak and forest guard Khirod Chandra Goud rushed to the spot and rescued the animal from a pool of blood. A veterinarian treated the animal but it succumbed to its injuries late in the night.
The carcass was buried on the forest office premises after a post-mortem. The death of blackbucks either in road mishaps or due to dog bites in the region has become a cause of concern for forest officials and animal lovers.
The Bhetanai area in the district is home to several blackbucks. Animal lovers have demanded that vehicle drivers should slow down in the area to avoid mishaps involving blackbucks.
