Chilika: A day after leading daily Orissa POST carried an article about rampant poaching in Asia’s largest brackish water lake Chilika, forest department officials of Tangi division nabbed a poacher Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, the forest arrested the man from Abhimanpur Ring Road near Chilika lake in Khurda district Sunday on charges of poaching migratory birds.
The poacher has been identified as Alok Pradhan of Ujuda village.
According to sources, Alok is a regular offender. He strays into Chilika and poaches rare migratory birds that have come to Chilika.
After killing the birds, he sells it in market for premium rates. As usual, after poaching the birds, he was carrying the dead migratory birds on a motorcycle to sell them when the forest officials intercepted him at Abhimanpur Ring Road and nabbed him.
The forest officials seized the dead migratory birds and the motorcycle from his possession.
A case has been registered against him and further investigation into the incident is underway, the officials said.
