Parajang: A pall of gloom descended on Gobindapur village under Parajang police limits in Dhenkanal district after the body of a three-year-old girl who was set afire by her mother reached the village.
Meanwhile, the girl’s mother who also set herself on fire has been battling for life in SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack with severe burn injuries, reports said.
The deceased child was identified as Lipsa Seth, daughter of Anita Seth, 26.
According to reports, Anita, mother of two children – Lipsa and her brother – was under trauma following squabble with her husband Jitu Seth Saturday.
In an act of rage, Anita poured kerosene on Lipsa, who was asleep and set her afire. Later, she also set herself ablaze while Jitu was away with his son after the disturbance.
Hearing their screams, neighbours broke open the house and rescued the mother-daughter duo in a critical condition. They were first rushed to Angul District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) and later shifted to SCB Medical College & Hospital for further treatment. However, Lipsa succumbed to burn injuries Sunday. After post-mortem, the body was sent back to the village for final rites.
Till the last report came in, Anita was battling for life at SCB.
In another case, a woman, identified as Gayatri Sahu, wife of Sundha Sahu of Parajang, tried to immolate self after dousing kerosene. Sundha rescued her and admitted her to Parajang community health centre (CHC). After preliminary treatment, she has been shifted to Talcher Mandal Hospital where her condition remained critical.
