Barang: Miscreants shot dead a non-teaching employee of a university in Cuttack near Godisahi police outpost in broad daylight Sunday.
The victim, Sunil Ranjan Sahu of Sambalpur, was working as a supervisor at a private university in Cuttack.
According to locals, the incident occurred when Sahu was having tea at a marketplace near the police outpost at around 11 am. Two youths reached the tea shop on a scooter and called Sahu to a nearby temple in the locality. One of the youths fired three rounds at Sahu after a verbal altercation, locals said. Sahu sustained bullet injuries on his head, belly and hand. “The duo fled the spot when the shopkeepers raised an alarm,” said a local.
On being informed, police reached the spot and rushed Sahu to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police suspect that the miscreants might have eliminated Sahu either due to previous enmity or a love affair.
Cuttack deputy commissioner of police Akhilesvar Singh along with a scientific team visited the spot and initiated a probe into the incident.
“We suspect that the assailants were known to Sahu. We have seized victim’s bike, helmet and shoes,” Singh said.
Police, meanwhile, questioned a few students of the university in connection with the incident.
