Cuttack: The husband and in-laws of a woman were handed down life imprisonment Friday for murdering the woman for dowry.
Cuttack Additional District & Sessions Judge-III Bikram Pattnaik also imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 on each of them. The incident happened in 2008.
Sources said Pratima Behera, a resident of Kafla Bazaar married to Pradip Behera in 2003. During the marriage the parents of Pratima had given dowry. But Pratima’s in-laws tortured her demanding more.
The in-laws of Pratima informed her parents that she had been admitted to hospital with burns. However, when they reached the hospital they found her dead.
On the basis of the complaint lodged by her sister Parvati, Lalbagh police arrested Pratima’s in-laws and husband Pradip Behera for murder. Twenty-two people testified in the case. Public Prosecutor Bijay Mohanty led the prosecution.
