New Delhi: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is all set to move certain amendments in the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018, which makes the instant triple talaq a bailable offence, scheduled to be taken up for consideration and passing in the Lok Sabha Thursday.
BJD Parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha Bhartruhari Mahtab told Orissa POST that the party will try to persuade the government to remove criminality clause from the Bill.
“There have been some changes in this Bill put forth. There are certain amendments which we will be moving. We will try to impress upon the government to tone down the criminality in the Bill. Let’s see how the government responds,” Mahtab said.
Mahtab further said that several amendments were moved by the BJD when the Bill was introduced in the House earlier. He also said that the bill is not that harsh as it was earlier.
Last year, BJD had called the bill flawed and said that there are internal contradictions in the Bill.
It is to be mentioned here that the new triple talaq Bill will supersede an earlier bill passed in the Lok Sabha in December 2017 and pending in the Rajya Sabha.
The new Bill was introduced in the Lower House December 17 to make the practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims a penal offence.
The Bill declares the process of instant triple talaq illegal and lays the provision of three years imprisonment to the husband.
