During the evenings following the sunset, people switch on the lights in and around the house. In several houses, it is a regular daily practice to light lamps around this time in the puja altar as well as ion the either sides of the main entrance.
It is believed that this act will help ward of the evil forces outside the house and also provide a welcome signal to the gods who are passing by.
During the evenings, it is said that Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati enter the houses and bless the people. Therefore, it is said that during that time, the students must commit themselves to study and the elders must spend the time in worship or listening to devotional songs and mantras.
Such acts performed during that time is said to invoke the blessings of the goddesses as they are pleased and moved to give more than what they would actually give otherwise.
