London/ New Delhi: A cyber expert from the United States has claimed that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can be hacked and is demonstrating how it can be done. The event is taking place in London and is being organised by the Indian Journalists’ Association (Europe). With the Lok Sabha elections in sight, the event is sure to have a political impact. It comes days after the opposition formed a committee to look into electoral reforms after alleging that the ruling BJP had been manipulating EVMs. The machine, which has been the bone of contention in Indian politics, has been called the ‘chor machine’. Will the event vindicate the opposition? Or will the technology prove foolproof? Whatever happens, there will be a political furore, for sure.
Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde was murdered because he was aware of EVMs being rigged, Syed Shuja has said in a sensational claim. Shuja, who claims to have been involved in designing Electronic Voting Machines that are used in India, has said Munde was about to “expose” the government on the issue of EVMs being rigged.
Gopinath Munde was a senior BJP leader from Maharashtra and was a minister in the Narendra Modi cabinet until his death in June 2014. He died in a road accident around a fortnight after the BJP won the 2014 Lok Sabha election. Syed Shuja, the US-based cyber expert who claims to have proof of EVMs being tamperable, has claimed that he fled India and sought asylum in the US because he felt threatened here. Shuja said he sought political asylum in the US when asked about the circumstances of him leaving India.
Congress leader Kapil Sibal is present at the event in London where a US-based ‘cyber expert’ will demonstrate that Electronic Voting Machines can be hacked. The demonstration in London is not the first time somebody has tried to show that EVMs can be tampered with.
