Berhampur: A Class IV grade employee of MKCG Medical College and Hospital Friday alleged that he has been facing issues for bringing an elderly patient, who had been lying at the gate of the institute, to the hospital.
However, after an hour long ruckus in the hospital, the elderly man received treatment.
Mitu Dalabehera, an attendant at the surgery department, Friday noticed that an elderly man was lying at the gate. Taking pity on him, Mitu took him to the casualty ward on a stretcher after realising that the man had been lying there since Thursday.
As there was a huge rush of patients, the staff could not provide immediate medical attention to the man. This created a ruckus as patients and their attendants objected to any preferential treatment.
Mitu also allegedly received an earful from senior officials.
Later PG students treated the elderly man.
“I never have an idea that showing compassion to a neglected and deserted patient would land me in trouble,” said Mitu. Some patients and relatives took his side saying one should not be chided for showing humanity.
The patient has been identified as Raghunath Panigrahi, a priest. He could not continue his profession because of his health problems.
His relatives have also turned their backs on him.
When contacted, administrative officer of the hospital Sudam Mandal said he is yet to get any complaint in this connection.
